When a client visits our dental practice with an infected or damaged tooth, most of the time, the we are able to save the natural tooth. However, sometimes this is not possible, and then it is necessary to extract the tooth and replace it with a dental implant.
Implantology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the permanent implantation of artificial teeth in the jaw. Dental implants are provided using the following general process when it is determined that a natural tooth must be removed or when one or more teeth have been previously lost.
Dental Implantation Process
A detailed medical history of the patient will be taken by the team at Clinica Dental Champsaur and patient is acquainted with the possibilities of this type of treatment, benefits and possible risks. With fully informed patient’s consent, we proceed to further diagnostics and treatment.
- After the clinical examination that includes x-rays, the natural tooth is extracted if necessary.
- The jawbone is then prepared for the dental implant surgery. Some patients do not have sufficient bone density in their jaw to ensure a successful implantation, so it must be augmented with bone grafts prior to the implant process. This is done through a special X-ray that is a Tomography, which allows to accurately evaluate and measure the existing bone.
- During the dental implant surgery itself, the oral surgeon at Clínica Dental Champsaur will open the gum and expose the bone. A small hole will be drilled into the bone where the Titanium screw (dental implant metal post) will be placed. Since the post will serve as the tooth root, it is implanted deep into the bone.
- Generally after dental implant placement, a waiting period is necessary for the screw to integrate into the jaw to provide a firm and durable base, this is known as Osseointegration. Often times, a temporary tooth is provided during the waiting period (which can be up to six months).

Our dental surgeon will make sutures in the gum over the area that contains the dental implant so that it heals.
After osseointegration, the abutment and crown will be placed. The crown is a fixed prosthesis, which means that it is permanently attached to the jawbone and does not need to be removed like dentures or removable bridges do.
The dental implantology procedure in Panama is completely painless because it will be performed under local anesthesia and in some cases it can be performed with sedation for the comfort of the patients.
Implant durability
The durability of dental implants is almost the same as the durability of our natural teeth because the implants behave very similarly to natural teeth and will increase the quality of life of the patient. However, although they have a high success rate, the patient is required to properly clean the teeth and implants and attend their check-ups.
Detailed and accurate diagnoses, correct implant number planning and placement with the use of digital aids such as CT scan and surgical guides are all important prerequisites for such longevity of dental implants.
Based on the diagnostic and functional analysis carried out, we create an individual treatment plan for each patient in which we determine the sufficient number and the correct position of the implant in each jaw, which is the basis for the longevity of the implant.
Complications after implant placement The most common causes of complications after implant placement are poor dental hygiene, smoking, and lack of dental check-ups after implant placement.
Implant overload and improper chewing system function can also lead to complications and loss of the implant.
Advantages of implants compared to a classic prosthesis
There are several advantages of dental implants:
• Permanent solution: after the oral implantologist at Clinica Dental Champsaur inserts the implant, nothing more is required.
• Maintains healthy teeth: When using traditional procedures, such as bridges, it is necessary to reshape the adjacent teeth so that they can receive a rigid bridge. The placement of dental implants excludes the need to reshape or carve neighboring teeth
• Looks better: If you lose a tooth (including the crown and root), the decrease in your jaw can cause your face to age. Dental implant placement can stop that process.
